Chapter Seven

Emily

The rest of the benefit had gone by so quickly Emily wondered if she’d dreamed it. They’d made a ton of money by auctioning off various goods donated by different store owners in town. It didn’t even bother her that Lewis was outbidding everyone. He had the money. Why not put it toward a good cause? It certainly helped her warm to him at least a little.

But even though the benefit was over, even though she’d made good money, even though she was exhausted and could barely feel her feet, she had to get to work.

It was turning overcast as she walked down the empty sidewalk the next day. The storefronts she passed were fully awake and alive, filled with people. She waved at Becks when she saw her through the large window looking in to the hardware shop. It was just one of the dozens of places that had never changed a bit.

It was strange how each place held a memory, like a brick and mortar scrapbook filled with snippets of her life. There was the small ice cream parlor where she would go every Friday after school with her mom for a treat; and the farm supply store she worked at in high school—mainly for the discount, since they sold animal feed and medicines. Then she made a left at the sewing shop where her grandma would always go for buttons and fabric for her many projects that ended up as drapes and dresses.

Twenty-five years ago, she had been born in the town, a seed planted to grow slowly in a cozy pot beneath the sun that never moved. But Aiden’s arrival had helped her to bloom, petals unfurling and vines snaking out to touch places she had never thought possible. She had actually never dreamed of anything larger than Birdsong, never needed to, but now the possibilities were endless. What would it be like to live in a big city? Certainly there were dogs who needed help there. But could she afford a place with enough room for a rescue? She couldn’t help but think about it as she strolled through town.

Cindy’s Place was nestled between a dry cleaner and a daycare. Several little faces pressed themselves against the daycare window as she passed, making grotesque expressions between peals of giggles. Emily stuck her tongue out and they scattered. She laughed and opened the sub shop’s front door, ready for her shift.

It was an immaculate eatery with red leather booths and top forty hits playing over the speaker system. A few of the tables were full already and she eyed a meatball sub one man was just picking up. She wasn’t hungry, having just finished a stack of pancakes for a late breakfast, but she thought bringing home a little something for dinner later would be a good idea.

She stepped up to the counter and looked around a display bag of chips for her friend. “Cindy? Are you here?”

Cindy appeared through the swinging kitchen doors and grinned as she pulled off her gloves.
